Working towards Green Public Procurement (GPP) in Bhutan

As implementation partner of the Green Public Procurement (GPP) Bhutan project, the CSCP supports the integration of social and environmental practices into the public procurement cycle of the government of Bhutan. In collaboration with our project partners, the International Institute for Sustainable Development (iiSD), the Bhutan Chamber of Commerce and Industry (BCCI), the Royal Society for the Protection of Nature (RSPN), the Royal Institute of Management (RIM), we strive to leverage the purchasing power of the public sector in Bhutan in order to achieve green industrial development through sustainable consumption and production (SCP).

Since public procurement accounts for about 70 per cent of government spending in Bhutan, green public procurement (GPP) is a powerful up-scaling tool. GPP is a means to lowering negative impacts of state-consumption, incentivising sustainable production among suppliers and building both demand-side and supply-side capacity. Consequently, the project triggers sustainable development and is an example for private sustainable consumption and green economic transformation.

Kicked off in Thimphu, Bhutan, on 31st March 2014, the project will run for the next 3.5 years.
