Thailand SCP Policy Support Project

SUPPORTING THE THAI GOVERNMENT WITH SCP POLICY DEVELOPMENT AND IMPELENTATION

Thailand has among the most highly developed SCP policy frameworks in Asia. The success of sustainable consumption approaches is in part connected to the Thai tradition of being a sharing society.

Sustained levels of economic growth in Thailand in recent decades has provided significant economic benefits and reduced poverty. While the country’s improvement of key socio-economic conditions is impressive, Thailand, like many countries is facing serious environmental challenges due to rapid industrial and economic growth. Some of the most significant environmental impacts include mangrove deforestation, reduced forest cover, water and air pollution and increasing waste quantities.

SCP Policy Support for Thailand

The overall objective of the SCP Policy Support for Thailand project is to assist the Thai government to select, adapt and implement appropriate policy instruments. These should promote SCP with the aim of enhancing the long-term sustainability of Thai consumption and production. The project aims to strengthen the institutional policy framework and ensure coordinated and effective SCP effort in Thailand.

There are four project components:

  • institutional frameworks for SCP
  • green procurement
  • support programs for sustainable production
  • SCP awareness

SCP is a crosscutting issue. Therefore the project will involve a multitude of Thai government ministries, local authorities, enterprises, private sector organisations and NGOs.

The project will extend from October 2011 to September 2014.

The role of the CSCP

As an international partner, the CSCP will provide SCP experts for specific short term assignments in each of the four project components.
