The Pakistan industrial base is expected to expand significantly in the coming years. The Pakistani Vision 2030 envisions an average industrial growth rate of 8-10% per year lasting through to 2030. Spatially this industrial development is planned along the intercity corridors in the form of industrial estates.
These corridors pass through regions that are currently dominated by agricultural and rural lands. Industrial growth can cause significant environmental and social impacts in these areas if not managed properly. It is of paramount importance that these planned industrial estates are developed in a sustainable manner to minimise negative environmental and social impacts.
Best practice and management toolkits tailored for local partners
The aim of the PISD program is to assist major industrial sectors to adopt best practice in environmental management and energy efficiency within overarching sustainability frameworks in Pakistani industrial estates. These sustainability frameworks are designed as practical toolkits to guide management in targeted industrial estates to support improved economic, environmental, and social performance.
The PISD team is developing a generic sustainability framework on the basis of local circumstances and best international practices. The generic framework is customised to selected industrial estates (e.g. Sundar Industrial Estate) in collaboration with local partners, including government bodies, management boards and industries operating in the estates.
The role of the CSCP Based on experience in international industrial estates (e.g. Australia, South Africa, and Asia), the CSCP is providing expert advice to the PISD team on the development of the generic sustainability framework. Furthermore, the CSCP is assisting with implementation of a customised framework for the Sundar Industrial Estate. In November, 2011 the CSCP undertook a field trip to Lahore to work closely with the PISD team and local partners. |
