One-Stop-Shop

On energy efficiency in buildings

It is in buildings that we live, work and carry out almost all of our business. To make our houses and work sites suitable to live and work, we need energy, most

importantly for space heating and cooling and for operating appliances. According to the International Energy Agency buildings account for approximately 40% of global final energy demand and one third of the energy-related CO2 emissions (IEA 2008). Because of this, increasing the efficiency of energy use in buildings is a critical component of any strategy to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and avoid risks of adverse impacts.

One stop – all information

Bridging the information gap on Energy Efficiency in buildings (bigEE) is an international initiative that aims to provide a web-based “one-stop-shop” resource for energy efficiency issues in buildings. The initiative assists policy-makers and private decision-makers/investors to make informed decisions when seeking to enhance energy efficiency of buildings.

Successful launch in Doha

On December 4th 2012 the web-based knowledge platform bigEE.net was launched during the UN Climate Negotiations in Doha, Qatar. It is the most comprehensive web-based information resource of its kind on energy efficiency in buildings. It provides an integrated overview of existing know-how on technological solutions, policy options and examples of good practice drawn from around the world.

“Cheapest, fastest, cleanest”

The president of the German Federal Environment Agency (UBA) Jochen Flasbarth was the keynote speaker during the launching ceremony of bigee.net. In his address he emphasized the fact that

"up-scaling of energy efficiency is the cheapest, fastest and cleanest energy resource for climate protection in the short and medium term."

This applies particularly to the building sector in fast developing economies, where there is at present a sharp increase in the building stock due to rapid economic growth.

Country specific information

In addition to worldwide general information bigee.net will also provide country-specific information. The initiative is currently preparing the launch of their Chinese country pages, scheduled for launch on April 2, 2013 during the Green Buildings Conference in Beijing.

We invite you to explore with us the first ever “one-stop-shop” for information on energy efficiency options and energy reduction potentials, net benefits and how policy can support achieving those savings. Click here
