My flat, my bike, my shopping basket

Sustainable Lifestyles in NRW

How can I convince my landlord to install climate friendly heating? Which energy supplier offers genuine renewable energy?Who can teach me how to fix my bike? Where can I find the nearest car sharing station? What about a bus stop? When is the season for strawberries? Where do I get organic cotton t-shirts?Let's work it out together! With a consumer platform, thematic workshops and a roadmap for further actions we are working our way to sustainable lifestyles in NRW.

Each and every one of us makes dozens of small and large decisions every day. These decisions  shape our lifestyles

and determine the environmental and social impacts that arise from our choices. To help people make informed decisions and to show that it can be fun to make sustainable choices are the aims of the Sustainable Lifestyles in NRW project.

Using an online platform we want to bridge the information gap between existing sustainable shopping opportunities, mobility and living choices that are available to consumers in North Rhine-Westphalia to help people shape their lives. Consumers can get lost in the jungle of eco and fair-trade labels and are often unaware of alternatives to personal car ownership or simply don't know about a community garden project near their homes.

Facts are not enough

Although a lack of information is sometimes a barrier to more sustainable

living, it is clear that we need to inspire and motivate consumers to change and move in the right direction. Most people do know about recycling waste and the health benefits of reducing meat consumption or even going vegetarian.

But these efforts are not enough. We need to inspire people to move beyond these first steps toward sustainability. Through a series of workshops we will explore new approaches with potential to make our lives more sustainable and at the same time more fun. Examples can include new sharing opportunities, growing food together in a common garden, or repairing something that might otherwise end up as trash.

Collaborative ideas for a collaborative future

The CSCP is designing an online platform and face-to-face workshops to bring together entrepreneurs, NGOs, public and private initiatives and consumers to discuss solutions with potential to enable people in NRW to live more sustainably. We will explore questions like: Which innovation could help people who live outside cities to switch away from private cars to public transport? And how can we stimulate a broader shift in all parts of NRW society to integrate sustainability into their lives?

A roadmap for action

Concrete milestones will be the final output of the stakeholder discussions

during the workshops. The milestones will serve to inform and support consumers on their roads to sustainable living and to guide the NRW Ministry for Climate Protection, Environment, Agriculture, Nature Conservation and Consumer Protection in this process. The overarching goal is to develop innovative policy recommendations for NRW to take the region to the forefront of sustainability practice and research.

The Sustainable Lifestyles in NRW project is generously financed by the Ministry for Climate Protection, Environment, Agriculture, Nature Conservation and Consumer Protection of the German State of North Rhine-Westphalia.
